15 Inexpensive or Free Ways to De-Stress During the Summer With Your Husband

I’m so glad it’s finally summertime! It’s one of my favorite times of the year. Steven and I love to take this time to go on dates and spend quality time together. We love traveling, exploring and seeing the world but that can definitely get pricey. And on a college student budget, it’s hard go on extravagant dates and adventures every weekend without going completely broke.

Sometimes the same Netflix and dinner date over and over again can get a little boring! So I have to think outside of the box sometimes in order to have an amazing date night that’s also easy on the budget.

My hubby and I have done these dates on several occasions and they were awesome! It was so much fun to just let loose and act like kids again.

Here are 14 inexpensive (or free) date ideas to help you de-stress during the summer with your husband:

Have a cooking/baking competition

You’re already making dinner anyway! Why not make it fun?! Have a little competition. Make two entrees and see who’s taste better. Make two pies, two cakes and see what kind of wacky flavors you can come up with. Steven and I love baking and this was so much fun for us. If you’re more of a recipe-following kind of person, I put together a list of 30 date night recipes that include appetizers, dinner, and desserts! You can find them here.

Make homemade ice cream or go out for some

Homemade ice cream is a staple in our family. We use a churn, but there are tons of no-churn recipes on Pinterest that you can follow! If you don’t feel like making it and the budget allows, go out and get it! Some places even have great deals during certain hours of the day, like Sonic.

Have a Disney (or any kind) movie marathon

Steven and I LOVE watching Disney movies! I saw just about every single one of the classic movies growing up, but he has only seen a few. We have a bucket list of all the Disney movies we want to see, and it would be great to take a night and have a marathon with all of them!

Go on a hike

This would be a great way to get outside and get some fresh air together! You also get to see great scenery this way. If you are close to some mountains with hiking trails, or even a state park, this would be a great active date!

Go strawberry picking

My family used to do this when I was little and I loved it! It’s a fun way to get some fresh strawberries and it would make an even more fun date with your hubby. Steven and I did this a few weeks ago and I even made some printables for the date and a game to go along with it! You can snag those here. Be sure to take lots of pictures!

Go fishing

This isn’t our thing, but some people love it and it’s a great date for summer time! Take some time to relax together and talk while catching some dinner 😉

Play board games and/or card games

Monopoly is our favorite! 🙂 We also love to google new card games we can play.

Have a wii tournament

Whatever game you like to play, turn it into a competition! Make bets with each other, such as whoever wins has to make dinner. Steven and I loved this date and we are planning to do it again soon!

DIY Something

Take random craft supplies you already have at home and see what you can make out of it! They would be great gifts!

Go swimming

If you have a pool near you and the weather permits, go swimming together! If you don’t own a pool, go to a neighbor’s house or your local recreation center.

Have a cup of coffee/your favorite drink and just talk

Sometimes the most simple dates are the best dates! Talk and reconnect with each other.

Have a fire and roast marshmallows

One of our favorite summer traditions! Smores would be great too 😉

Watch funny videos on Facebook/YouTube

My husband loves doing this! Grab some popcorn, a sweet treat and an ice cold drink and watch some comedies.

Go play a sport together

My husband and I aren’t the sporty type so this really isn’t our thing, but some couples are super sporty and love a good competition! Play some volleyball on the beach or soccer in the front yard.

If all else fails, go to bed early

Hey, it’s free and it sure is fun if you know what I mean! 😉

strawberry picking date

Strawberry Picking Date – Plus FREE Printables!

Treat yourself to some fun in the sun with your sweetheart! Then head back home for an even sweeter treat!

Picking strawberries has been a tradition in my family for as long as I can remember!    Almost every spring when I was a child, my mom would load my brother and I in the car and we would head down the road to our (amazing!) local strawberry farm. Every year they allow guests to come out in the fields with a basket and pick their own strawberries! We always had the best time and made memories that I will definitely cherish forever.

laugh your way to a better marriage

Laugh Your Way to a Better Marriage

“I don’t understand why this is so difficult!” I mumbled under my breath as I was washing the huge pile of dishes in the sink. He knows I hate when he leaves food in the bowls and then puts them in the sink! Why doesn’t he just do what I ask him to do?! It would be so much easier on me if he would stop doing this!

If you know me really well, you know I despise doing dishes. I would rather scrub the toilet with a toothbrush than touch a dirty dish that has been sitting in the sink for days. Just something about the smelly water and old food stains makes me want to hurl. My husband hates doing laundry just as much as I hate doing dishes. So, we finally ended up making an agreement. He does the dishes, I do the laundry.

Becoming One: A 30-Day Devotional for Wives

Are you ready to have a deeper, more intimate connection with your husband while also growing closer to the Lord? My devotional “Becoming One” will encourage and equip you to do just that!

When I got married, I realized that there were not a lot of helpful, biblical resources out there for young or newly-married wives! I began to notice that a lot of wives in their first few years of marriage were really struggling. They needed practical marriage advice explaining what to do about certain situations such as finance problems, who does household chores, what to do about extended family issues, etc. None of those topics were covered in a standard devotional. Then the idea for this devotional was born!

A Love Letter to My Husband on a Day When I Don’t Feel Too Good about Myself

To my sweet husband,

I know you probably get tired of hearing me complain on days like this.

Some days I just wake up, look in the mirror, and realize how disgusted I am with myself. The way I look, the way I talk, and the way I dress just repulses me at times. I ramble on about how my pants are too tight, my face is broken out, and my hair just won’t do what I want it to do. I complain about my failures and tell you how I’m a horrible wife whose house isn’t spotless or even remotely clean for that matter. I don’t always have everything together. I get lazy and run behind on things. I don’t always love you like I should and that burns me to my core.

During our dating years, we were not one physically, but we always felt like the same person emotionally and spiritually. For the most part, we always think the same way. He knows what I’m going to say before I even say it. I know what he is going to do before he even does it. We have the same values, same goals, same style, and same outlook on life. We just click, and we always have. We strongly believe that when God was creating us, He made us specifically for each other.
